How to Prepare Your Kids for Family Photos (Without the Stress or Tears)

By Missy | Life in Between Photography – Houston County Family Photographer

Hey there!

If you’ve ever tried to get your kids ready for family photos, you know it can feel a little like herding soggy kittens in a thunder storm. One kid can’t find their shoes, another suddenly hates their outfit, and before you know it everyone’s frustrated and grumpy.

Here’s the reality: your family photos don’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.

As a family photographer in Houston County, Georgia, I’ve seen firsthand that the most meaningful images often come from the in-between moments the laughter, the cuddles, the silliness, and the genuine love that makes your family yours.

So let’s make this easy. Here are a few mom-tested, photographer-approved tips to help you prepare your kids (and yourself) for a stress-free photo session.

1. Your Energy Sets the Tone

Kids pick up on our energy. If you’re relaxed and happy, they’ll feel that too. Instead of saying, “We have to take pictures,” try, “We’re going to play outside with Missy while she takes photos of our family!”

When the session feels like fun instead of a chore, the smiles will come more naturally and your photos reflect that.

2. Feed the Little Ones (and Maybe Yourself Too!)

I know sometimes this is easier said than done, but it’s one of the biggest gamechangers: happy bellies = happy kids. Feed everyone before your session, and pack a few mess-free snacks like pretzels, fruit snacks, or granola bars.

* Pro tip: Avoid chocolate or lollipops, they tend to melt, stain, and distract.

3. Dress for Comfort (Not Perfection)

The best photos happen when everyone feels comfortable. Choose soft, breathable fabrics that let your kids move freely. Flowy dresses, linen shirts, and bare feet always photograph beautifully.

Neutral and earthy tones create timeless images, but the most important thing is that your family feels like themselves.

And if your toddler insists on wearing their favorite superhero cape or rain boots? Let them. Those little quirks tell your family’s story in the most authentic way.

4. Keep Expectations Simple

You don’t have to worry about posing or forcing smiles, that’s my job! My sessions are gently guided and full of play. I’ll prompt your family to connect, laugh, and move naturally.

Your only job? Be present. Love on your people. Everything else will fall into place.

5. Embrace the Beautiful Chaos

There might be giggles, wiggles, or a tear or two ,and that’s okay. Some of the most heartfelt moments happen right after the chaos. Real life is beautifully imperfect, and that’s exactly what I want to capture for you.

When you let go of perfection and allow your kids to simply be, you’ll walk away with photos that truly feel like your family full of love, connection, and warmth.

Family sessions aren’t about stiff poses or perfect smiles — they’re about freezing the love, laughter, and connection that fill your home every day.

So take a deep breath, pack the snacks, and show up just as you are. I’ll take care of the rest. 💛
